Anniversary Film Fest 2017 – this is how it went!

What a Film Festival for our 5th anniversary! The weather was weighted towards delightful Autumn sunshine and this year’s visitors came execptionally plentifully. With over 2.000 guests, WITHOUT BOARDERS once again clearly lured more film fans to the ‘culture barn’ than the previous year. ‘Good news’ was not only the motto of the festival but also the echo of the top-class movie schedule and the numerous prominent guests.

From the outset at the grand opening on Friday evening we were able to  greet Ronald Zehrfeld with his team from ‘Motorcircus’, that helped present his project ‘Mission South/ Ärzte helfen e.V’. The greeting of the official anniversary celebrations on Saturday was held by Kirsten Niehuus, the managing director of the `Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg`. She praised not only the development of the festival but to our delight also announced a further grant for the coming five years.

The films – of which many were sneak-preview premiers – were accompanied by plenty of film discussions. A particular highlight was the extensive conversation that Gero von Boehm led with our guest of honour, the 95 year-old Georg Stefan Troller. On Saturday evening Princess Shaw rocked the stage – having travelled from New Orleans –  as well as the protagonist of the document of the same name. A heartily applauded performance was also given to Sister Fa, alias Fatou Ditta, after the showing of the film ‘Little Stones’.

On Sunday, Barbara Schöneberger and Gero von Boehm charmingly narrated the Discussion Round, this time with Volker Schlöndorff, Aelrun Goette, Nik Xhelilaj and Isabell Suba. Good news in the world of film? Above all, that in the meantime ladies are breaking through strongly onto the film market!

Last but not least, we are very happy that even before the film fest began we could invite 160 students to our ‘School Cinema’ and provide two workshops for Brandenburg students and young refugees. The presentation of the resulting film music took place to great acclaim on the first evening.

The response to this year’s film festival was fantastic! At this stage, we would like to once more heartily thank our sponsors, primarily the Media Board of Berlin-Brandenburg, our main sponsor DAIMLER and the foundations and businesses that made the film festival possible.

Next year the Film Festival will take place from the 6th – 9th of September 2018; we’re already looking forward to your attendance!
